It is the cradle of Hasidic Judaism: the Baal Shem Tov (1698–1760) made it his seat from ~1740 until his death and is buried there, making it a pilgrimage destination. The community was devastated in the 1648 Khmelnytsky massacre (~2,500 killed) yet rebuilt to a Jewish majority (4,614 Jews, ~58%, in 1926). Under German occupation roughly 2,558–3,000 Jews were shot in 1942. Sources: Wikipedia — Medzhybizh, jewua.org, JewishGen / YIVO ## People with events here | Person | Event | | --- | --- | | [[Aharon (b.1745)]] | Born 1745 | | [[Moshe Chaim Ephraim Ashkenazi (b.1748)]] | Born ~1748, Died 05/12/1800 | | [[Simcha Weinberg (b.1750)]] | Born 1750 | | [[Yisrael (b.1750)]] | Born 1750 | | [[Yitzchak (b.1750)]] | Born 1750 | | [[Baruch Ashkenazi (b.1753)]] | Born 1753, Died 12/04/1811 | | [[Baruch (b.1753)]] | Born 1753, Died 12/04/1811 | | [[Feiga Ashkenazi (b.1755)]] | Born ~1755, Died 03/04/1801 | | [[Israel Isserles (b.1698)]] | Died 05/22/1760 | | [[Yechiel Tzvi Horodenker of Krementchik and Tcherin (b.1771)]] | Born ~1771 | | [[Nachman Horodenker (b.1772)]] | Born 04/04/1772 | | [[Perel Weinberg (b.1775)]] | Born ~1775 | | [[Yisroel Horodenka (b.1776)]] | Born 1776 | | [[Udel (b.1780)]] | Born 1780 | | [[Edel (b.1720)]] | Died 1787 | | [[Grina Horodenka (b.1799)]] | Born ~1799 | | [[Nachman Horodenka (b.1810)]] | Born 1810 | | [[Nosson Nuta Grinbarg (b.1830)]] | Born 1830 | | [[Shimshon Aryeh Iserov (b.1864)]] | Born ~1864 | | [[Bina Isseroff (b.1884)]] | Born ~1884 | | [[Nutta Cholodenko Iserov (b.1886)]] | Born ~1886 | | [[Avram Isseroff (b.1888)]] | Born 02/01/1888 | | [[Fannie Glassberg (b.1893)]] | Born ~1893 |
