## Overview
Medzhybizh, in Podolia, was a Polish magnate fortress-town first mentioned in 1146 and passed to Russia in the 1793 Second Partition. It is the cradle of Hasidic Judaism: the Baal Shem Tov (1698–1760) made it his seat from ~1740 until his death and is buried there, making it a pilgrimage destination. The community was devastated in the 1648 Khmelnytsky massacre (~2,500 killed) yet rebuilt to a Jewish majority (4,614 Jews, ~58%, in 1926). Under German occupation roughly 2,558–3,000 Jews were shot in 1942.
