Jewish presence is recorded from around the 16th century; the community was devastated in the 1648–1651 Chmielnicki uprisings and again by Haidamaks in 1734, but rebuilt and, with the arrival of Rabbi Avraham Yehoshua Heschel's line in the early 19th century, became the seat of the 'Zinkov' Hasidic dynasty. The Jewish population rose from 2,150 in 1847 to a peak of 3,719 in the 1897 census (about 53%). During the Holocaust about 600 Jews were shot outside the town on 9 May 1942 and a further 1,882 on 4 August 1942, destroying the community.
