Jews settled here in the first half of the 19th century — the Jewish cemetery dates to that period, with gravestones from as early as 1820. The community grew from about 75 Jews in 1880 (roughly 5% of the population) to 252 by 1921 under Czechoslovak rule. Hungarian forces took control in March 1939; in August 1941 Jews without Hungarian citizenship were expelled to Kamianets-Podilskyi in Nazi-occupied Ukraine and murdered, and the remaining Jews of Kerecke were deported to **Auschwitz** in mid-May 1944.
