# Piaski Ghetto <table class="place-meta"> <tr><td>Location</td><td>Piaski (Piaski Luterskie), Lublin District (occupied Poland)</td></tr> <tr><td>Region (today)</td><td>Piaski, Świdnik County, Lublin Voivodeship, Poland</td></tr> <tr><td>Coordinates</td><td>51°08′N 22°51′E</td></tr> </table> ## Overview The Piaski Ghetto was a Nazi ghetto in the town of Piaski, about 25 km southeast of Lublin, established in 1940. Beyond confining the town's own long-standing Jewish community, Piaski served as one of the Lublin District's transit ghettos (alongside Izbica, Rejowiec and Krasnystaw) during Aktion Reinhard: thousands of German, Austrian, Czech and Slovak Jews were routed through it in 1942 on the way to the Bełżec and Sobibór extermination camps. The main liquidation Aktion took place 22–30 October 1942, when some 5,000 Jews were deported to Sobibór via Trawniki; on 23 October a further 3,000 Jews marched in from the Łęczna ghetto were likewise sent on to Sobibór. The community was destroyed; a Jewish cemetery survives as a memorial. <small>Sources: Holocaust Historical Society — Piaski; deathcamps.org — The Lublin District Transit Ghettos (Izbica, Piaski, Rejowiec); Wikipedia — Piaski, Świdnik County.</small> ## People with events here | Person | Event | | --- | --- | | [[Nojech Barbanel (b.1898)]] | Died ~1941 | | [[Dawid Szloma Barbanel (b.1867)]] | Died 1942 | | [[Dawid Szloma Barbanel (b.1904)]] | Died 1942 | | [[Froim Fiszel Barbanel (b.1928)]] | Died 1942 | | [[Wolf Hersz Rotkier (b.1910)]] | Died ~1942 |
