Historically part of Bereg County in the Kingdom of Hungary, it passed to Czechoslovakia after WWI, was re-annexed by Hungary in 1939, and became part of Soviet Ukraine in 1945. Its Jewish community — like the small Hasidic-influenced communities across the Volovets district — was destroyed in the Holocaust: Jews unable to prove citizenship were expelled toward Nazi-occupied Ukraine in the summer of 1941, and the remaining Jews were deported to **Auschwitz** in mid-May 1944, part of the mass deportation of over 100,000 Transcarpathian Jews between May 14 and June 7, 1944.
