# Deep-dive: Wolf Hamer in the Piaski town books
**Goal.** Find [[Wolf Hamer (b.1772)]] (patronymic **Wulf Szymonowicz**, "Spektor"/inspector, haCohen, active ~1800–1851 Piaski) in the municipal books. Pre-1821 he appears as *Wulf Szymonowicz*, not "Hamer." Watch also for brother **Mosiek/Moszek Szymonowicz** and any Jewish parties.
**Collection.** Akta miasta Piask, APL **35/49/0**, Archiwum Państwowe w Lublinie. 8 units, 946 scans, handwritten Polish/Latin cursive, no name index. Each księga has a 19th-c. *Sumariusz* (handwritten summary) at the back.

## Findings
*(record each hit: unit, scan #, date, what it says about Wolf, confidence)*
- **Unit 6 (book VI) reconnaissance (2026-07-02):** Book is chronological, opening 1778 and running to ~1802+ (single late entry to 1827 per catalog). Scans 1–3 = archival cover/colour-bar; content from scan 4. Year markers seen: scan 5 ≈ 1778; scan 10 ≈ 1782–84; scan 17 ≈ 1799–1800 (pages 28–29); scan 22 ≈ 1802 (pages 38–39). **Sumariusz (index) = scans 35–37** ([links above](#reference-files-—-psa-scans--catalog-links)), a *tabular* list titled "Summaryusz Księgi VI Zapisów wieczystych Miejskich Miasta Piaskow" with numbered rows naming the parties of each transaction + a księga-page column. Księga proper closes ~karta 64 ("Księga Skreślona…", signed *Stanisław Wroński, Ławnik*, wax seals).
- **Parties are overwhelmingly Christian townsfolk** (Deynek/Deyneka, Wroński, Bałayc, Wrampolski, Janisiewski, Ciechoński, Kowalski…). **But Jews do appear**: scan 22 (~1802) has a Latin *Cautio* naming **"Berek Michałowicz."**
- **Unit 6 (book VI) — Sumariusz FULLY READ at full res (scans 35, 36, 37) on 2026-07-02.** Indexes ~50+ transactions (1778–early 1800s): guild-master elections (Cechmistrz), house/cow taxations, land pledges, and — in the later (~1800s) entries — **many Jewish parties and synagogue/kahał (Bożnica) matters**. Jewish names catalogued from the index (with the księga page each cites):
- *Leyba Fajerowicz* — house tax (page 19)
- *Nuchym Wolfowicz* — "na Kahał Bożniczych Żydzi" / synagogue-board matter (**page 21**)
- *Jodła Jakubowicz* & *Nuta Jakubowicz* — "Indagacya" / investigations (pages 21–23)
- *Moszek Uszerowicz* — Cyrkuł Lubelski / Gubernia Krakowska correspondence (pages 23–24)
- *Berek Lewkowicz* — ordered released from lease/pacht (page 32)
- *Majer Wolfowicz* — house dispute (page 34)
- *Leyzor Wolfowicz* vs *Rubin Zelmanowicz* — testimony (page 36)
- *Szik Majorowicz*, *Boruch Majorowicz* + *Jodł Majorowicz* — house (pages 37, 39)
- *Chaim Jekowicz*, *Leyba Chaimowicz*, *Szmul Boruch*, *…Abramowicz* (scan 37, pages 52–63)
- Earlier (book VI content, scan 22 ~1802): *Berek Michałowicz* (Latin Cautio)
- **RESULT: NO entry headlines "Wulf Szymonowicz" or "Wolf Hamer."** The many *Wolfowicz* (son-of-Wolf) Jews are OTHER men — our Wolf is son-of-**Szymon**, so his patronymic form is *Wulf Szymonowicz*. **CAVEAT:** the index only names each transaction's *primary* party; Wolf (as *szkolnik/spektor*) could still be named *inside* a synagogue/kahał entry (esp. **page 21** "Kahał Bożnicy," which is on **scan ~13**). Those underlying pages are worth reading if pursuing him hard.
- **Leads to weigh:** the *Wolfowicz* cluster (Majer/Leyzor/Nuchym) may be Wolf's brothers/cousins or another Wolf family in Piaski — note but do not assume kinship.
- **Synagogue/kahał entries READ IN FULL — scans 13 & 14 (księga pages 20–23), on 2026-07-02.** These are the pages the index flagged ("Kahał Bożniczych Żydzi," page 21; "Indagacya" pages 21–23). Content = a **1797 dispute between the Piaski and Biskupice synagogues** (Bożnica Biskupicka) plus a **witness investigation ("Zeznanie/Indagacya") of the servant *Gryna*** — a slander/sorcery matter tied to innkeeper Jodła Jakubowicz. People named:
- **1797 Piaski kahał board (Kachalni), signed 20 Jan 1797:** *Rubin Zylowicz* (Rezydent), *Abram Aronowicz*, *Haim Maiorowicz*, *Gierzon Sylowicz*.
- **Clergy:** *Jonasz (Jonas) Maiskowicz — Rabin Piaski* (Rabbi of Piaski), *Judka Maiskowicz — Duchowny* (8 Feb 1797).
- *Josow Mortkowicz* (elected/"od całey Synagogi Piaseckiey wybrany"); *Jodła Jakubowicz* (innkeeper at WJ Sucharski's inn); *Nuta Kupiec*; servant *Gryna* (the witness).
- **RESULT: Wolf / Wulf Szymonowicz is NOT named** in the synagogue/kahał pages. In 1797 he was only ~25 and evidently not yet a kahał officer (his documented "Spektor" role is 1818+).
- **Strategic takeaway:** book VI content runs 1778–~1802, i.e. mostly BEFORE Wolf's documented adult life. His active-official years are **1818–1851**, so the later units — **unit 3 (to 1822), unit 5, and especially unit 7 (1844–1865 correspondence + contribution lists)** — are the higher-probability targets. Book VI can be considered **cleared**.
- **Unit 7 (1844–1865) — surveyed all 110 scans + read the contribution rolls, on 2026-07-02.** Content = **Piaski municipal forest administration**: correspondence with the *Naczelnik Powiatu Lubelskiego*, forest-user **contribution lists (składki)**, court verdicts, and a forest sketch/map (scan 49). The name-bearing pages are the składki (scans **44, 46, 80, 81**) — a recurring roll of ~57 **Christian townsmen/farmers** holding forest-use rights (Janiszewski, Wroński, Golewski, Sałata, Matyjas, Borach, Dęgowski, Guz, Woźniak, Ciastula…), only sporadic Jewish names (e.g. *Moszek Fryzterski*). Scan 80's roll is **signed at Piaski, November 1852**.
- **RESULT: NO Wolf Hamer / Wulf Szymonowicz.** And the rolls **post-date his October 1851 death**. Forest-use rolls were a Christian-burgher domain; Jews are essentially absent. **Unit 7 cleared.**
- *Scope note:* the ~90 prose correspondence letters (administrative forest matters, no name lists) were surveyed by thumbnail but not each transcribed — very low yield for finding an individual, and the only enumerated-name pages (the składki) were read.
- **Unit 3 (book III) — Sumariusz read (scan 64 = pages 118–119), on 2026-07-02.** The index is one spread covering księga pages 46–114 (roughly 1810–1822; pages 1–45 not on this index page). ~40 entries — court decrees, property records, contracts. **Rich in Jewish parties:** Chaim Majanowicz, Mejer Michałowicz, Rubin Jozachimowicz, Ludyk Abramowicz, Jodka Moszkowicz, Rubin Zeldowicz, Berek Abramowicz, Wigdor Aybowicz, Jaka Dawidowicz, Moszek (several), and two "Wolf" entries — **"Wolf Moszkowicz"** (p.97) and **"Wolf Mandlowicz"** (p.98).
- **RESULT: NO "Wulf/Wolf Szymonowicz" or Hamer.** The two Wolfs are son-of-Moszek and son-of-Mendel — not ours (son of Szymon). Same primary-party caveat as book VI. Sumariusz scans: [63 (księga close)](https://photos.szukajwarchiwach.gov.pl/dcc3626defdb927c8d7fcb54a2356555c637399cef700a48da51d8512bf92d7c_max) · [64 (index)](https://photos.szukajwarchiwach.gov.pl/42f8d27cc59fc6c803c1f45a79f5083492afcfa2a6ae4fee63c83473e6d1075f_max).
- **Unit 5 (book V) — Sumariusz read (scans 190–193 = pages 371–377), on 2026-07-02.** Indexes księga pages ~118–368 (roughly 1799–1822). ~150 entries, overwhelmingly Christian townsfolk land transactions (Malyska, Wroński, Deynek, Janiszewski, Jaworowski, Sałata, Borach) with scattered Jews (Dawid Ulewnicz, Mordka Ryskowicz, Moszek Chajowicz, Ezyk Moszkowicz, Jan Abramowicz, Dawid Maynowicz, Rubin Feiwiszowicz, Israel Jchowicz, Jenta, a "Wolfowicz Wajman," Jaka Majanowicz…).
- **One promising lead chased and dismissed:** index entry "Zapis [Sz.] **Symonowicza** z Hilerym Majanowiczem o Dom — p.139" looked like a *son of Szymon* (Wolf's father). Read the actual pages 139–140: it's a house-and-brick-shop (*Sklep wymurowany*) inheritance dispute in the **Szelągowski** family, party "**Syn Symch[owicz]**" (son of *Symcha*, not Szymon), witness *Lucher Szyiowicz*; the facing 1802 sale is Christian (Jan & Teresa Wroński). Cursive "Symchowicz" ≈ "Symonowicz" — **unrelated to Wolf's line.**
- **RESULT: NO Wolf Szymonowicz / Hamer in book V.**
## Piaski Jews named in these town books (a by-product census, c.1778–1852)
*Compiled 2026-07-02 from the scans read for the Wolf search. **Caveats:** these are readings of 18th–19th-c. Polish/Latin cursive — **spellings are approximate**, uncertain readings marked "(?)". Most are index (Sumariusz) entries, so the "info" is only what the index states; patronymic **-owicz = "son of"** (e.g. *Wolfowicz* = son of Wolf, *Aronowicz* = son of Aron). Each row links to the scan it's on; the **p.** number is the księga page cited (navigate to it in the [unit viewer] if you want the full entry). None of these is our [[Wolf Hamer (b.1772)]] (= Wulf **Szymonowicz**).*

> **Note for cross-referencing:** several of these surnames recur elsewhere in the vault (e.g. **Majanowicz, Abramowicz, Aybowicz, Zeldowicz, Michałowicz**). If any tie to existing profiles or brick walls, treat these town-book mentions as datable Piaski attestations (name + rough year + property/occupation) worth adding to those people's Evidence.

## Notes on legibility / method
- **BEST method — bypass the viewer entirely (token- & time-efficient):** On the jednostka page, every scan thumbnail is an `<img>` whose src is `photos.szukajwarchiwach.gov.pl/{hash}_mid`, **in scan order**. Grab the ordered hash list from the DOM (JS: collect `img` srcs containing `_mid`; the first N = scans 1…N, before the ~4 "related materials" thumbs). Swap `_mid`→`_max` and navigate straight to `…/{hash}_max` (≈3500 px, very legible) to read any page — no viewer, no click-paging. Scan *k* is DOM index *k−1*. (`curl` does NOT work — the host is behind Incapsula/Imperva bot-protection and returns a challenge page to non-browser clients; must use the logged-in browser tab.)
- **Viewer navigation gotcha (avoid):** the on-page viewer's forward/back arrow *moves* when the sidebar/description reflows, so scripted clicks miss; images cache after a first pass so the network log won't show re-visits; and the site throws intermittent 502s under load. The DOM-hash method above sidesteps all of this.
- **Page→scan map for book VI:** content scan *k* = księga pages (2k−6)…(2k−5). e.g. scan 13 = pp 20–21, scan 17 = pp 28–29, scan 22 = pp 38–39.
- **Efficient search order:** read each księga's **Sumariusz** first (it names transaction parties in a table); only dive into full entries when the index shows a Jewish/Wolf party. Then unit 7's 1844–1865 **contribution lists (wykazy składek)** — a communal official like Wolf may be listed by name.
- **Caveat on yield:** these are Christian-dominated municipal land/court books; a Jewish communal official appears only occasionally. Density is low — a supplementary source, not a name-indexed database.
## CONCLUSION (2026-07-02) — town books effectively exhausted for Wolf
**Four of the five Wolf-era units worked — books III, V, VI and unit 7 — ALL negative.** Wolf (Wulf Szymonowicz / Hamer) does **not** appear as a named party in any of their indexes or the pages checked. Only **unit 4 (testaments 1778–1821)** is unread (user deprioritised — mostly pre-dates his adult life).
**Why the avenue is low-yield:** these are **Christian-burgher municipal records** — guild elections, forest-use rolls, and land transactions among townsmen. Piaski Jews appear regularly as *property* parties (dozens catalogued across the books) and in occasional synagogue/kahał items, but **Wolf simply isn't among them.** Plausibly he owned/leased rather than transacting in the town books, or his property dealings post-date book V (closed ~1822) and fall outside these volumes. The one "son-of-Szymon" lead (book V p.139) proved to be a *Symcha* family, unrelated.
**Recommended pivot (higher yield):**
1. **Transcribe Wolf's own 1851 death record (akta 26)** — already linked on his profile, never read; gives his stated age, marital status, occupation, and named informants (often sons).
2. **Geneteka / JRI-Poland** on *Hamer / Hamerman / Wulf Szymonowicz* in Piaski — indexed; likely surfaces a possible 3rd marriage (post-1836), other children, and cross-checks the Mindla death-date conflict.
3. **Kahał/synagogue registers** (if any survive for Piaski) — the record type where a *Spektor* is actually named (cf. the 1797 kahał document in book VI).
*Optional loose end:* **unit 4 (testaments) Sumariusz** — a quick same-method check for any Szymonowicz/Hamer testator or witness, if closing the sweep completely.
