# Barbanel — Who was Josef's father?
The direct Barbanel male line (Ozzy ← [[Gila Barbanel (b.1977)]] ← … ← [[Chaim Barbanel (b.1840)]] ← [[Nusyn Barbanel (b.1798)]] ← **[[Josef Barbanel (b.1773)]]**) dead-ends at Josef (~1773 – bef.1824), all rooted in **[[Ostrów Lubelski]]**, Lublin gubernia.
## Current best answer
Josef's father was most likely a man named **Michel/Michał** — *but this is inferred, not documented*. In the 1819 Ostrów Lubelski billing list Josef appears as **"Josef Michlowicz"** (= son of Michel). Under the **1821 Congress-Poland surname decree** (fixed surnames declared 1821–24, enforced 1823–25), the family adopting "Barbanel" ~1820–24 fits perfectly. So "Michel" rests on the patronymic, not a record naming him.
## Hypotheses
| # | hypothesis | for | against | confidence |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| A | Josef's father = **Michel** | "Josef Michlowicz" in 1819 list | circumstantial; no record links that Josef to ours | ~45% |
| B | The patriarch was **Moszek** | Nusyn appears as "Nusyn **Moszkowicz**"; "Moszek" recurs across 3 descendant branches (Ashkenazi naming usually honors a direct ancestor) | needs the Michlowicz reading to be a different Josef | ~35% |
| C | Josef ← Michel ← Moszek (two gens) | reconciles both patronymics + the naming | speculative, no document | ~30% (overlaps A) |
## Resolved / flags
- ✅ **[[Nusyn Barbanel (b.1798)]] → Josef is CONFIRMED** via Nusyn's documented brother **[[Mordko Wolf Barbanel (b.1809)]]** (m. 1829 / d. 1847 Łęczna records name father Josef; both are co-children of Josef & Judes). My earlier "undocumented" note was an artifact of the lossy MyHeritage GEDCOM export (it dropped Josef's and Mordko Wolf's notes).
- 🚩 **"Hersh Leib Barbanel"** on [[Chaim Barbanel (b.1840)]]'s Geni record is a bad merge — contradicts his 1914 Lublin death act ("son of Nusym and Rajzla"). Treat as false (~5%).
- ⚠️ **Sephardic/Abarbanel descent** = folklore, not fact. The surname was *adopted ~1821* onto a patronymic base; no evidence of true Don-Isaac-Abarbanel lineage.
## Record reality
Jewish vital registration here starts ~1826, so **Josef's death (bef.1824) almost certainly has no record**. Don't hunt it.
## Direct reads (2026-07-06)
- ✅ **1819 Ostrów contribution list read directly** (jednostka 17743028, cur=39): No. 7 "**Josef Michlowicz**," No. 2 "**Moszko Michlowicz**" — the two Michlowicz brothers in one roll. This is the core evidence for hypothesis A (Michel) and for [[Moszek Barbanel]] being Josef's brother rather than father. Image now on [[Josef Barbanel (b.1773)]] and [[PLACEHOLDER Michel Barbanel]].
- ✅ **Surname adoption bracketed to ~1819–1821**: father still "Josef Michlowicz" (Feb 1819) → son [[Nusyn Barbanel (b.1798)]] already "Nusyn Barbanel," heading the house-owners, in the early-1820s billeting assessment (jednostka 17743030, cur=101, read directly).
- ⚠️ **Correction — the notarial "#135 of 1871" is NOT a death record.** Read directly (skanoteka id=2491, plik 102): it is a **mortgage obligation** (oblig, Rs. 100) between Nusyn Barbanel of Ostrów and Chaia (wife of Mortka); Nusyn signs it himself. It does **not** name his father. The earlier "read #135, it names his father" step rested on a misidentification. Nusyn's father is instead independently confirmed by the **1833 rental deed** (act 194, Lubartów), which names/signs him "Nusyn **Jozfowicz** [son of Josef] Barbanel."
## Next steps
1. **1821 surname-declaration books** (Lublin/Siedlce State Archive) — the literal Michlowicz→Barbanel document; usually names the father. *(Highest-value remaining lead.)*
2. **Marriage acts of Nusyn's children** — Jewish marriage records name father + grandfather.
3. **[[Mordko Wolf Barbanel (b.1809)]]'s collateral / Majer's 1840 Kock death (akta 40)** — extract Moszek + Malia to test the brother/Moszek theory.
4. **Y-DNA** of a male-line Barbanel cousin (Ozzy's own Y is Bernstein) — tests Sephardic question + whether scattered Lublin Barbanels are one family.
